Wedding Friday: Chic, Fabulous and Unique Ideas for Alternative Weddings

So he finally pop the question and asked you to be his bride.  You, the happy new bride-to-be said yes! Now that you are ready to say “I do” what theme should you consider for your wedding day? What color palettes and details will make this the most spectacular day of your life?  You know traditional weddings are beautiful, but you want something more, something unique that marries your personal taste, lifestyle, hobbies and ideals.  Congrats on the engagement, so excited you want something different and new.

This is what you can find in the styles of Retro, Vintage, Geek, Gothic,  Steampunk,  novelty, Boho, Punk, as well Dia de los Muertos inspired weddings, which are just some of the many new takes included in what we call today alternative weddings.  What I love about alternative weddings is that they are inspired by the uniqueness of the individuals getting married, by their dreams, their wishes, their love story, their personal lifestyles, their hobbies, their pets, their friends, their jobs and their homes.  Alternative weddings sets the mood and the tone for your special day in creative, original and clever new ways!

I have been looking for new ideas to offer as an alternative to conventional weddings for those newly engaged couples interested  for something unexpected. Pursuing this quest I recently came across this handsome boutonniere by French Knot Weddings , what guy wouldn’t look awesome on his wedding day with this fabulous boutonniere. It plays with the Steampunk theme and brings lots of color and flexibility to the wedding, plus gives a total modern look  to a groom walking down the aisle. French Knot Weddings has some beautiful and very unique designs for grooms including vests and boutonnieres,  and they specialize in handmade and vintage inspired items for your wedding day including birdcage veils, hairpieces and bouquets, so lovely!

If  you love black lace, papel picado, skulls, crosses and vintage style, as well as hardcore rock n’ roll, you can introduce your signature style  at your wedding with details, there is a myriad of  inspiring looks that offer drama, magic and exciting new ways to personalize your wedding.  This invitation by Citlali Creativo is a fabulous example of Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos imagery complete with vintage font and calaveras (sugar skull) designs.  I am in awe at the beautiful finds at the Seattle-based  Citlali, their innovative alternative wedding invitations and those featuring  Mexican papel picado too!

As for the wedding dress, who says white rules?   Vera Wang’s 2013 collection just strut its stuff down the runway in gorgeous burgundy hues and reds.  A fairytale bride in an all black and purple gown, or a flowing veil of shimmering red tulle, is just as stunning!  This outstanding beauty is brilliantly displayed in the bridal couture  collection by KMKDesigns .  I love their wedding dress collection, the fabrics are luscious and so glamorous, and they offer a fantastic menswear wedding apparel line.  You can find anything from a Lolita inspired Victorian dresses, to a fabulous black and brown Steampunk wedding  gowns with gathered skirt, among others, just fresh and so chic.

The ceremony and reception decor grant you space to give the wedding a little personality and a punch of color.  Be Gothic and ghoulish, or just playful and colorful —  you can test newfound ideas and incorporate them in table decor, favors, banners, chair  backers and sweet table displays.  This beautiful handmade doll by Piecake Primitives, would make a lovely addition to a wedding cake table or the head table in a Halloween or gothic wedding. She is handmade by the wonderful Lorraine Gerbi, the artist behind the primitive folk art dolls at Piecake Primitives.  Lorraine offers such a wide range of dolls and styles with the most fascinating collection of primitive dolls you can imagine, it’s hard to pick just one.

And what wedding wouldn’t be complete without a dynamic addition to the wedding cake.  There are so many amazing wedding cake toppers with skulls, punk brides and grooms, and Mexican sugar skulls, but I found the very whimsical styles of Kisses by Cat delightful.  Kisses by Cat offers unique wedding toppers, and this Gothic couple really caught my eye, but they have so many more.  Paper crafts and other decorating ideas can also be found, each lovingly crafted and handmade with delicate paper gowns and tuxedos, complete with sparkling jewelry and glitter, and finished by the sweetest and delicate little roses you can find.

There are several online sources to guide through the planning process.  I’ve fallen in love with two very unique and distinctive alternative wedding blogs. You know about my fascination with Alice in Weddingland, the site offers so many ideas for weddings including unique themes, fabulous cakes, glamorous wedding dresses, sultry accessories and the most amazing engagement photography.  And now, I am equally enjoying the wonderful weddings at When Geeks Wed, such great ideas for all kinds of weddings.  They understand first hand the needs of unconventional brides and grooms.  When Geeks Wed was created to inspire geeky, gamer and alternative brides and grooms with DIY projects, real weddings, fantastic finds, photos, and accessories.  This blog truly won me over, I plainly fell in love. It shows you can do traditional with a fun alternative twist.

I do hope industry insiders realize the needs of this fast growing market. For those of you planning your upcoming nuptials, have fun incorporating your own style at your wedding, get ready to rock – be unique!  To learn more about the designers, blogs and shops listed above, click on the highlights and check out their thematic designs. I am planning to make some amazingly new wedding bouquets and wreaths soon, inspired by these themes, and also by certain little bot named R2!   I truly cannot wait!
